Investigation reveals racial discrimination rife in Swedish dental practices


STOCKHOLM, Sweden: An explosive new report by the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter has revealed the widespread existence of ethnic discrimination at both public and private medical and dental practices across the Nordic nation. Posing as new patients looking to be treated by so-called “ethnically Swedish” practitioners, journalists from the newspaper contacted more than 100 healthcare facilities and found that nearly half of these agreed to their request.

BDA blasts potential migrant dental checks as “unethical”


LONDON, UK: In 2016, the Member of Parliament for Monmouth, David Davies, courted controversy when he suggested that dental checks could be used to verify the age of teenage Syrian and Afghani refugees whom he believed looked “older than 18”. Five years later, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has come under fire from the British Dental Association (BDA) after it was reported in The Times that the Home Office’s Nationality and Borders Bill would allow dental radiographs to be used to ascertain asylum seekers’ ages.

LEIPZIG, Germany: Sales at major dental companies climbed in the second quarter of this year compared with the same period in 2020, during which the pandemic brought dentistry to a grinding halt. In the latest series of earnings reports, some dental company chiefs praised the recovery of the market, whereas others outlined falling discretionary spending, concerns about SARS-CoV-2 variants and sluggish vaccine rollouts in some geographic areas.
