Investigation reveals racial discrimination rife in Swedish dental practices

STOCKHOLM, Sweden: An explosive new report by the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter has revealed the widespread existence of ethnic discrimination at both public and private medical and dental practices across the Nordic nation. Posing as new patients looking to be treated by so-called “ethnically Swedish” practitioners, journalists from the newspaper contacted more than 100 healthcare facilities and found that nearly half of these agreed to their request.

BDA blasts potential migrant dental checks as “unethical”

LONDON, UK: In 2016, the Member of Parliament for Monmouth, David Davies, courted controversy when he suggested that dental checks could be used to verify the age of teenage Syrian and Afghani refugees whom he believed looked “older than 18”. Five years later, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has come under fire from the British Dental Association (BDA) after it was reported in The Times that the Home Office’s Nationality and Borders Bill would allow dental radiographs to be used to ascertain asylum seekers’ ages.

COVID-19 and the dental market: The pandemic continues to bite

LEIPZIG, Germany: Sales at major dental companies climbed in the second quarter of this year compared with the same period in 2020, during which the pandemic brought dentistry to a grinding halt. In the latest series of earnings reports, some dental company chiefs praised the recovery of the market, whereas others outlined falling discretionary spending, concerns about SARS-CoV-2 variants and sluggish vaccine rollouts in some geographic areas.

Slow down everyone—dentistry does not need to be done at speed—Part 1

Dentistry in many parts of the world is being taken over by financially driven practices, and there seems to be a growing number of clinics that are focused only on the bottom line and, as such, see the largest number of patients possible a day, putting themselves and their patients at risk. How? By not taking the appropriate amount of time to process patients’ information, properly discuss treatment options with them and prepare the
operatory for therapy and in many cases by not placing a dental dam when needed.

SINGAPORE: Why should dental professionals strive towards sustainable dentistry? Firstly, it is the right thing to do ethically; secondly, it is a great marketing-tool; and finally, it creates an attractive workplace for new colleagues, since research indicates that the younger generation values sustainable workplaces more highly than monetary compensation. Before taking steps towards creating a green dental practice and practising green dentistry, the practitioner should understand that sustainability minimises the pitfalls and simplifies the process. This article will give a brief overview of sustainable development, focusing on Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN).

Study: Oral health, sarcopenia and diabetes mellitus

ONAN, Japan: Maintaining good oral health has many benefits, including those pertaining to systemic health. For example, a few studies have already addressed the link between oral health, sarcopenia and diabetes. However, since evidence is scarce and results often inconsistent, researchers from Japan have examined whether deteriorating oral health could lead to loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength or hyperglycaemia. They found that poor oral health is associated with both sarcopenia and diabetes.

Why emotional intelligence in dentistry is a vital skill

LEIPZIG, Germany: Emotional intelligence (EI) relates to the ways in which an individual can understand and manage his or her own needs as well as recognise and deal with the needs of others and the abilities to do this. As a dental professional, these are important skills to have because every activity during a treatment process requires connecting emotionally with patients, and those who can put their EI into practice effectively will be more successful in the long run.

Worrisome level of vaccine hesitancy found among dental students

BRNO, Czech Republic: A study of the attitudes of dental students around the world towards COVID-19 vaccines found that 22.5% were hesitant and 13.9% rejected the vaccines outright. The researchers found that acceptancy of vaccines among dental students was suboptimal owing to a range of factors, such as socio-economic contexts, and they called for a greater focus on infectious disease epidemiology education within undergraduate dental curricula.
