SINGAPORE: Why should dental professionals strive towards sustainable dentistry? Firstly, it is the right thing to do ethically; secondly, it is a great marketing-tool; and finally, it creates an attractive workplace for new colleagues, since research indicates that the younger generation values sustainable workplaces more highly than monetary compensation. Before taking steps towards creating a green dental practice and practising green dentistry, the practitioner should understand that sustainability minimises the pitfalls and simplifies the process. This article will give a brief overview of sustainable development, focusing on Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN).

Study: Oral health, sarcopenia and diabetes mellitus

ONAN, Japan: Maintaining good oral health has many benefits, including those pertaining to systemic health. For example, a few studies have already addressed the link between oral health, sarcopenia and diabetes. However, since evidence is scarce and results often inconsistent, researchers from Japan have examined whether deteriorating oral health could lead to loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength or hyperglycaemia. They found that poor oral health is associated with both sarcopenia and diabetes.

Worrisome level of vaccine hesitancy found among dental students

BRNO, Czech Republic: A study of the attitudes of dental students around the world towards COVID-19 vaccines found that 22.5% were hesitant and 13.9% rejected the vaccines outright. The researchers found that acceptancy of vaccines among dental students was suboptimal owing to a range of factors, such as socio-economic contexts, and they called for a greater focus on infectious disease epidemiology education within undergraduate dental curricula.

Key topics included the efficacy of the Invisalign system and clear aligners as a treatment option in young patients. Over 1,200 orthodontists from 60 countries attended the symposium, which was concluded by a high-quality poster presentation.

Fighting SARS-CoV-2 with mouthwashes—study adds to evidence of efficacy

BADALONA, Spain: Mouthwashes that contain cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) have been found to reduce by at least one thousand times the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. Researchers in Spain tested CPC-containing mouthwashes against variants of SARS-CoV-2, including the Alpha variant, and said that such mouth rinses could constitute a cost-effective measure to aid in the reduction of viral transmission.
