Tooth whitening, or tooth bleaching, can correct discolorations or stains on your teeth. There are several different methods of tooth bleaching. Chemical whiteining, mild acid whitening, abrasive tooth brightening, and laser tooth whitening.
A bleaching gel is applied to the discolored tooth and laser light is directed at the tooth to increase the whitening effect of the gel. The length of the procedure is relative to the amount of discoloration.
A bleaching abrasive is applied to the stained tooth. This method is most common due to it's low cost, but is only effective against mild discoloration.
The effects of tooth whitening are not permanent. Depending upon personal habits, the whitening effects can last one or more years.
The cost of tooth bleaching depends on the method being used by your cosmetic dentist. An average cost for whitening one tooth might be $80; laser whitening for your entire mouth can cost $600 to $1000. Dental insurance will not usually cover the cost of tooth whitening.
