Dental crowns are a dental restoration which is cemented into place over the visible portion of a tooth. They in effect become the outer surface of a tooth, covering and strengthening it. Tooth crowns are made with ceramics such as porcelain, metal alloys such as gold, or a combination of materials. Dental crowns are also known as dental caps.
There are several reasons a cosmetic dentist might recommend dental crowns. They can be used to restore the shape of a tooth, to strengthen a tooth, or to improve the appearance of a tooth.
Dental crowns can restore the shape of worn, broken, or decayed teeth. Since they cover the visible area of the tooth, the tooth appears restored and healthy.
Dental crowns completely cover teeth, so it is easy to improve the appearance of a tooth. Dental crowns are usually not recommended simply for the purpose of improving the cosmetic appearance of a tooth. It is preferable to use dental caps when they also serve another purpose, such as replacing fillings to strengthen a tooth.
The cost of crowns is dependent upon the materials used. Porcelain crowns take longer and cost more. Porcelain and gold crowns can range in cost from $600 to $3000 per tooth.
Dental insurance does not usually cover this procedure.
